X, a company formerly known as Twitter, is reportedly planning to launch a wire service called XWire. The product would be a newswire service to publish press releases, columns, and news stories.

Threads and X have taken two different approaches toward news. Instagram CEO Adam Mossei already announced Threads won’t be a platform for amplifying news and prefers to focus on conventional social media content. On the other hand, X and its owner, Elon Musk, strive to turn the platform into a reliable news source. Musk recently put Wikipedia on blast over the bias of its editors, claiming that X is a more reliable source of news and diverse opinions thanks to its Community Notes.

To double down on the news even more, X wants to launch a newswire service. The idea was discussed in the company’s all-hands internal meeting on Thursday. The goal is to create a service that would rival Cision’s PR Newswire, according to Bloomberg.

X launches XWire to battle newswire services

Elon Musk and X CEO Linda Yaccarino both attended the company’s all-hands meeting on Thursday to discuss the future of the platform. The Bloomberg report adds that Musk has told X staff that they see YouTube and LinkedIn as future competitors. New business lines in video and hiring are also future additions to the platform. These announcements align with Musk’s initial idea of turning X into an “everything app.”

X’s plans for video and hiring are already in progress. The platform has recently introduced audio and video calling for iOS users. The feature lets users customize who can make calls with them, and there’s also an option for turning off the feature. X also challenged YouTube by letting verified users upload up to 2 hours long videos on the platform.

Regarding the hiring features, X launched the jobs listing service a few months ago. The new service lets companies post job listings on their profiles through “Job cards.” This is a direct rivalry between X and LinkedIn. It remains to be seen how X’s future additions will challenge the LinkedIn business.

While previous reports claim X lost over 600 Million visitors in September, the company announced at its latest meeting that it had reached 100 billion impressions per day. Additionally, over half a billion posts are published on the platform daily.
